Paul, who grew up in Texas, moved to Ponca City Oklahoma in 1979. He was a classroom teacher for 9 years and principal for 11 years before he entered the world of competitive BBQ. He has been married to his wife, Shelly, for 39 years, and they have two sons, Josh and Eric, who also live in Oklahoma.
Paul met Danny Head, owner of Head Country Foods, in 1990 during a BBQ competition. In 1999, Paul became a employee of Head Country. He then went on to become a co-owner of the company nine years later.
